CRUSADE No. 20 ~ Casting Call
We have less time this month since I want to keep the due date at the first of the month, but it's an easy challenge, and you should have all the supplies you need to complete this one at home. The most important thing to remember when making a paper cast is to wait it out and let it dry properly. The newly formed paper image should easily lift out of the mold when dry.
If you don't have a blender you can try the alternative which is to simply lay squares of toilet paper or Kleenex (facial tissue) across your mold or rubber stamp and blot with a wet paint brush, lightly tapping to press paper into the depths of the surface. Layer one square on at a time, wetting and tapping in between layers. I prefer to use pulp made from the blender because then I have more options with color, and I like the raggedy edges you get from pressing pulp into a mold.
Casting on rubber is easy - and you don't necessarily need a release agent. Try it without. Lightly brushing baby powder on the clean rubber surface may help when easing the dried cast from the stamp.
If you've already been making paper casts then you are one step ahead. If you haven't done it yet I promise you will enjoy it. Make some casts, then take some photos or scans, blog about it (or load to your flickr or photohosting site), link to here, and come back and leave a comment. I'll post the links as they come in, newest at top. (Archived Crusades are in alphabetical order by first name.)
Anyone can play so join us! You are always welcome to join a previous crusade, just label accordingly and your link will be added under the current link list to be eligible for the Top Hat drawing. CRUSADE No. 20 ~ Casting Call DUE DATE: June 1st

LOve the sound of this one. It's something I've had in my mind to try for at some point. Count me in!

oh cool - I've been waiting for this one to turn up as a crusade, as I've seen some of the cool stuff you've done with paper casting in the past
I have plenty of loo roll - with 3 boys in the house and endless streams of teenage friends passing through, I have to buy it by the truckload :)
and I have lots of stamps, and moulds too. so what am I waiting for?? :)

Hey Michelle,
Can't wait to try this one. Like Flo, I remember seeing your casting pieces in your artwork and loving them.
I have had all the supplies I need to do this but have never made the time to actually try it. This will be fun! We are leaving for the weekend in just a few minutes but I think I should be able to find time Sunday or Monday.
As always, great instructions and examples!
Hope your return trip home went well and sister is better.
Until later,
Judy

Oh for the Love of God!
I've been checking back and back...
and would have never guessed this sort of project.
There shall be no rest for the weary.
Off I go to gather my goods.

Wonderful challenge Michelle...I need to get back on track since I never got round to doing last months...life just got in the way
Definately will have a go at this one now that things have calmed down a little.

I have done a little of this and it's great fun! I have a ton of things going on this month, but I'm going to work on this around the edges. HAA! around the edges!! get it? And see how it goes. It's fun to combine projects, too, and I know this will work out on one of the other three projects due at month end, so this will be fabulous! Thanks for all this information. I look forward to checking in more this month to see everyone's work.

Phew! Finally got Crusade 19 done and posted here http://www.cathrs.blogspot.com
Really enjoyed the stencil making once I got to it, I think it's something I'll use quite a bit. Thanks Michelle :-)

OH MY! I loved doing this. The results were great. Now I am going to look for more castables.
http://mcdc3s.blogspot.com/2008/05/crusade-20-casting-call.html
And I used the "quickie" method. Can't wait to see what happens when I go full speed ahead.
Thanks Michelle for another cool challenge.

Obsessed with making a mold...I have an update on my progress for this crusade: Play-doh doesn't work. It hardens when left in the air to dry, but cracks pretty badly. Back to the drawing board. :)

Just today I nearly signed up for a class to learn how to make molds. So glad I waited! I am $100.00 richer and get to learn from an incredibly amazing teacher. One day I hope to hop into a class of yours in person. Until then, thanks so much for sharing your processes online!

I haven't quite cast my mind (ahem!) to the newest Crusade, but here are some last bits of stencil making. http://commutersjournal.blogspot.com
I finally made the stencil I wanted to try most and if you scroll down, you will see the brave marching monks inspired by eb's April posting. Paper casting to come soon. I have tons of scraps from making tissue paper flowers for the ladies' rooms during the bar mitzvah. Can't wait to try them in paper casting.

Michelle - another great crusade. I still have to get back to 18 & 19 as life got in the way. Off to do some more casting but there is already some on my blog. - Nicki

What a fun challenge, O Fearless Leader! And I think it will solve a little creative dilemma I'm in, so that's a bonus. I'm loving it and will do more. Thank you! Marilyn

May is speeding by, the end of the school year and all that. Here are some casts I've done in the past but nothing new yet. Some are using toilet paper and some are "cheating" with paper clay...

Thanks for this great tutorial and for the challenge. The paper cast post on my blog isn't something I did recently, but your challenge is timely, because I've been thinking lately about using paper pulp in my art. I think I need to try something new and different to get my creative juices going again and to challenge me to experiment with new ideas, or old ideas I should revisit again. Thanks. Count me in.

Michelle, this is really challenge for me and I really need to be more patient for the end product :)
I have try some in different mold. But it's turn out not satisfy. May be I took them out of the mold before it totally dry.

here: http://are-you-flowin.blogspot.com/2008/05/why-is-mum-blendering-bog-roll.html
I made tons of casts and have only used about half of them so far, so I still have lots of playtime left with these....

Looks like I barely squeezed in in time!

All right, I soaked a variety of papers: napkin, facial tissue, toilet paper, paper towel, unknown handmade papers and creamed them in the Vita-Mix. Slurry was so-so - I think the mix is not a good idea. The results were 2:5 (success:blah). I am definitely out of practice and I think making polymer clay molds is the way to go for certain kinds of images. Anyway, here are some more casts. Cheers

Hi Michelle,
Thank you so much for presenting us with another great challenge this month! Next time somebody asks me, "But what can you DO with rubber stamps, exactly...other than stamp...." I'll know just what to tell them.
