CRUSADE No. 21 ~ Irresistible
Here's another easy one! What I hope you learn from this is how cool it is to make your elements that are a little less conventional. Thinking out of the box. Taking some of your usual studio supplies and using them in a different way. This exercise keeps us on the look-out for interesting textures - and enables us to see the potential in materials you already have.
Materials for rubbing: your choice of stamps and/or stencils, crayons (Crayola works best), thin paper. Most journals have paper that is too thick to use for rubbing. Do your rubbings on loose paper and add to your journal later.
Materials for resist: acrylic paint, brush, spray bottle, paper towel or rag.
The rubbings alone are a terrific thing, but try the resist painting - it's so cool! Try using a white crayon. Here I was using a stencil - but you can use your rubber stamps, or my favorite: anaglypta (paintable) wallpaper. You can get a swatch of it from most home improvement stores.
There is alot of information on the internet about gravestone and brass rubbings so I won't cover that here. If you've done gravestone rubbings I'd love to see it! There are many fancy ways to capture a texture through rubbing but all you need for this is a simple crayon. A terrific book, now out of print but available used through Amazon real cheap, is "Making Paper and Fabric Rubbings", see HERE. I got the idea for adding rubbing as a challenge after getting The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones, see HERE. I loved the Henry Sr.'s diary from The Last Crusade, didn't you? Ha! Crusade!
I love to encourage you to make your own stuff - or as I say in my workshops "make it your own". Taking a rubbing of a texture, and then creating a resist painting with it is definitely a way to put your own spin on using an image.
So that's it! Make a wax rubbing, then paint over it for a resist. You can show the loose papers or better yet, add them to a journal page. Blog about it then come over here and leave a link in the comments. I'll post the entries as they come in, newest at top. As you visit the other crusaders who generously share their work be sure to leave encouraging words. Need a button? Take this:

so clever M. Love the title. Do you spend weeks thinking about how to frame the crusade? Looking forward to seeing all the gorgeousness. Crusaders are so innovative......

oooh, fun! I used to love doing brass rubbings when I was a kiddo.
there is actually a brass rubbing centre at Longleat House (where the wonderful Lord Bath lives - worth googling if you like English eccentrics, and he's a mean painter too...), and I was planning on taking a visit there with the kids soon. I might try and fit it into this month :)

Hmmm... this month looks interesting, all the more reason to go dig out some space on the work table. (I've been cleaning and it'ss piled sky high with stuff!) I'm just here to report another blog post showing how I'm incorporating past Crusades into my work. http://www.mydapperdog.com/blog/2008/06/tempus-fugit.html Now on to the Irresistible Rubbings! ;-)) HUGS!

I didn't get as good impressions as your example here. Will try more after reading the instructions line by line.

Hi, MIchelle, here's my first insane flurry of experiments. I LOVED doing this as a kid and did many grave rubbings in my teen years, given all the Revolutionary War cemeteries here in the Northeast. I'm bummed that the previous Crusade didn't work out for me. My first attempt using my scrap tissue paper fell apart and before I could figure out how to fix it, I had to go take care of my mother who was having a cornea transplant. I'm home now and couldn't let a challenge this juicy slip by me. So count me in at http://commutersjournal.blogspot.com.
Speaking of healing family members, how is Shannon?

Okay - now I'm inspired (esp. by Patty & Inge's pages). The mention of woodblocks led me to look for this lovely paper doll given to me by my paper doll collecting mom. I think I'll use it to make her a birthday card.

and... another one. Remember all those masks from our stencils? They are fun to rub (and then help out with some PS brush work inspired by Patty Van Dorin.

and...yet one more. No, really, I AM getting to work now.
really.

What a great crusade! I've always liked rubbings, but have never painted over them. Thanks for the idea. Here's my first attempt http://on-the-banks-of-bay-creek.blogspot.com/2008/06/crusade-no-21-irresistible.html , I'm sure there will be more.

Hello Michele,
just another post with a small example of a waxrubbing...
http://web.mac.com/pinkepinke/pinkepinke/Blog/Artikelen/2008/6/8_crusade_n°_21_%3A_wax_rubbings_and_making_cards....html
Because of the crusade I let my children in school draw with very colorful oilpastels ( the ones that can hold waxcrayons) and with another child I painted over the waxdrawing by letting him feel through acrylpaint with his hands, so he could experience his hands.
When it was dry I wiped it with a wet cloth. I really like the result ( but I always love the scribbles children make...)
It's not a waxrubbing, but the crusade got me inspired.... (normally I paint over waxcrayons with ecoline and this gives a nice result, but with acrylic paint it's different).
So thanks for the inspiration !
greetings
Inge
PS : enjoy the cooling pool... The weather is good here, but absolutely not so hot like at yours !!!

Hi Michele,
I saw this on stitchin fingers, had to take a look, I've been doing what you speak of for quite a few years, I used to use it as a great technique in the class room when I had a particularly difficult class, the children would all get stuck in and peace would prevail, lol.
Just to say it is a lovely way of working, I agree, it is very similar to printing after all. The definition of printing is the transfer of one surface to another, so that's what frottage is.
I also find it very useful if you are making a printing block, you can try out the surface to see if it does what you expect it to.
I used to go to decorating shops and ask them to keep all their old wallpaper books for me. Very useful I can tell you in more ways than one. the textured ones I cut up and put stiff card on the back so the children would know not to glue them to their work, lol. The non textured ones were great for collage work.
It's so nice to meet someone who makes their own materials and ideas too, so many creative people have become so dependant on kits etc.. that prescribe what to do and they are not able to use their own creativity to the full.
I never had access to many art things when I was young so I would scavenge, glad I did really, what about you?
Well, sorry I have rambled enough, but it's so great to see that someone else is full of great ideas. thanks for sharing it Michelle. Regards Tricia

Michelle - great work and wonderful tutorial! I have managed, after perusing some other's work, to actually put some art up on my site that is wax resist.

These resists and rubbings are more habit forming than the eraser stamps. I put up another post about my second go-round with them. http://on-the-banks-of-bay-creek.blogspot.com/2008/06/more-wax-resist.html
When I first saw the crusade, I wanted to show my 4-year-old granddaughter how to do it. We didn't get to paint them yesterday, but had the best time looking for textures to rub. I couldn't believe how cute little girl's shoe soles are. I think this will be a fun way to record her shoes as she grows out of them. I also did a squiggle drawing with textures in the spaces and around the outside as well. I'll post when I get that on my blog. Her bedroom was a veritible treasure trove for this crusade.

Another great challenge Michelle!!
i tried using some hand made lace as my textured element and I am quite pleased with the result. Definately another technique to add to our bag of tricks! It also brought back memories of prowling around old graveyards on Cape Cod trying to find the oldest stones with some cool textures- pruitans weren't much into fun designs tho!!
Htanks again!

I have been so busy with art commitments that I have not even had the chance to begin this challenge yet... but WILL this weekend... and will post when I do.
HOWEVER - I have been very busy using the rubberstamps I made a couple of challenges back - and posted those results here:
http://mcdc3s.blogspot.com/2008/06/traveling-sketchbook-update.html
I have really enjoyed working with them, and the stencils... and I know this challenge will be just as much fun.

Thanks for another challenge;they are all irresistable! Here is mine:

Last month was the first month I missed since beginning with the crusades many moons ago and I felt the absence of not participating like the absence of an old friend.

I had fun with doing some rubbings of my granddaughter's shoe soles and some of her flocked stickers. I liked what I came up with and decided not to paint over it this time. Now I want to try some more and see what they look like painted. Everywhere I look I see textures ready to rub and resist.
