OMG! Crusaders, you make me so happy! What a terrific month we had - nearly sixty links! Many of you really had a good time and made more than one piece with grids. We saw so many variations - I am thrilled to see all the cool stuff you did. Thanks for taking on this challenge and sharing your work so we all might learn a few new tricks! AND WELCOME to our new friends!! Lots of new players this month, yay!
So after lining up, and cutting papers to form a grid, this month I am encouraging you to try ripping. That's it. Tear paper into strips, and compose on your page. There are valuable lessons in learning to rip. And there are useful lessons in figuring out composition. Some of you used torn papers in your grid - you are already familiar with how organic and random working with ripped edges can be. I think there is a time when a straight edge is necessary and a time when a torn edge is more appropriate. Practice tearing this month even if you've done it before. I promise you will learn something.
A little history: You may know my degree is in architecture. I was very disciplined in being exact and linear. During college I took a collage class. We had an assignment where we had to Rip. Tear. No precision. No scissors. No straight edge ruler and cutting knife. We had to use paper elements that were torn. WHAT? I can't do that! I can't. I won't. But I did. And I learned to loosen up. Tearing is freeing. Ripping is random...but, oooh! the serendipitous things that can happen when you cave in and do it. So that is where I'm coming from in offering this challenge. Many of you may be comfortable with ripping - but I know there are some who are just as afraid as I was.
You don't have to tear your elements into strips - but I think it is easier to get going if you have an *assigment*.
EDIT: Participating links have been moved from sidebar to here. Visit them to learn more about how artists interpreted the challenge. Some links may no longer be active.

Oooh, I love this Crusade. But boy am I running behind -- I still haven't got round all last month's links and left comments on all them. I love seeing what everyone else has done, and hate missing any. Still, plenty of weekend left for checking them all out :-)

Another wonderful Crusade, can't wait to start tearing ;-) I think I visited most of the blogs, I noticed once the Crusade is done you sort the blogs alphabetically ... And then I am lost and don't know which ones I visited and which not LOL But I will check them again, it's fun to see others work and I really really appreciate all the wonderful comments I received on my blog !

I've only just come across these crusades...........number 42.. isn't that the answer to everything?.. maybe it's sign I should get my act together and join in! Tearing paper, scarey for a neat freak! going to get out of my box and give it a go!

Phew ... I finally got round the rest of last month's entries. It is so worth taking the time to do this, and leave comments, because there is just so much inspiration to be enjoyed. I feel artistically renewed by seeing everyone's creativity poured out in their blogs. What a joy! I'd like to say a huge thanks to all who participate and you, Michelle, for inspiring us all to do so.

what a great idea. your previous challenge had me drooling, but I didn't get it done. Now, I've signed up in the Sketchbook Project, and the theme I selected was: Lines and Grids. Because I LOVE them! And now, you have a strip challenge! You know I love to strip!
?what
I will be linking to a Flickr acct now, since my blog is suspended, so I hope people will feel just as comfortable to get a Flickr account and to comment. Those are always cool.
which reminds me: off to look at the crusaders!

I love ripped edges and use them constantly. This is such a great idea, Michelle! How about this variation? Take a paint brush and dip it into plain water and paint a line. While it's still wet, rip.

Yesterday I made a journal that I covered with natural fiber. . . shelf-liner! Wonderfully affordable at $5 a roll (12 inches x 5 feet) at The Container Store. But when I had cleverly covered both the inside and outside of the covers, I realized I'd have trouble telling up from down and front from back. Torn paper strips to the rescue! I wove some torn strips from a previous project where I'd used colored inks. Some were cut, some torn, and the result is here: http://wp.me/p2H1i-1cJ Thanks so much for doing this! I'm spending WAAAAAY too much time reading here and not working!
