Ready? Time to play again. If you've been following along you might get the impression I'm trying to get you to journal, as in visual journaling. You're right, I am. However, if you insist on resisting putting this stuff on paper you can always just make a blog post about it. That counts too.
So this Crusade is to journal (or blog) about the Evidence of Your Everyday. The simple stuff. The things you use or wear everyday. What's your favorite candle scent TODAY? What jewelry have you worn this past year? What new lipstick or nail polish did you start wearing? New hair color? Cool new shoes? Take pictures, make scraps, save labels, put them in your journal. It's a great exercise.....we often overlook the everyday stuff, and before you know it we've moved onto something new. It's a time capsule. It doesn't have to be about lipstick....maybe you have a favorite paper, or stamp, or color of paint that marks THIS time, February-ish 2007, or Late-ish 2006. Like, it could be taking the scraps of paper on your studio table TODAY, stapling them onto a page, and scribble a quick note about what they were used for. Still have remnants of xmas wrappings around because you fell in love with your wrapping theme? Clip some paper and ribbon, stick them in your journal, mark it Xmas 2006, then you can throw the rest of it out! Concert ticket stubs still in your purse? Take them out and put them in your journal.
Above are 2 pages I did for Teesha Moore's "Studio Zine Reloaded" in 2003 (made from pages below). They are pages of Evidence inspired by a friend who told me that after her mother passed away she found her mother's lipstick blot on a piece of paper. A final gift, a kiss. How personal, how sentimental. I began making my own yearly chronicles, with sprays of my current perfume, my everyday kisses, and my just-for-dress-up kisses. I love looking back and seeing this stuff. Glassine envelopes hold whiffs of perfume, with a note on the back. "Tommy Girl, gift from Graham, b-day 2002". Have a really been wearing Tommy Girl for 5 years?
Here's the first set of journal pages I made in 2002 to capture my kisses. Later this week I'll show you my current pages. Don't wear lipstick? That's not the point. Put something in your journal that marks this point in time - no matter how small. That necklace you wear everyday, never take off, just for a minute lay it on your scanner, print it out, and staple the copy in your journal and write a note about WHY you wear it.
