Here's another easy one! What I hope you learn from this is how cool it is to make your elements that are a little less conventional. Thinking out of the box. Taking some of your usual studio supplies and using them in a different way. This exercise keeps us on the look-out for interesting textures - and enables us to see the potential in materials you already have.
Materials for rubbing: your choice of stamps and/or stencils, crayons (Crayola works best), thin paper. Most journals have paper that is too thick to use for rubbing. Do your rubbings on loose paper and add to your journal later.
Materials for resist: acrylic paint, brush, spray bottle, paper towel or rag.
The rubbings alone are a terrific thing, but try the resist painting - it's so cool! Try using a white crayon. Here I was using a stencil - but you can use your rubber stamps, or my favorite: anaglypta (paintable) wallpaper. You can get a swatch of it from most home improvement stores.
There is alot of information on the internet about gravestone and brass rubbings so I won't cover that here. If you've done gravestone rubbings I'd love to see it! There are many fancy ways to capture a texture through rubbing but all you need for this is a simple crayon. A terrific book, now out of print but available used through Amazon real cheap, is "Making Paper and Fabric Rubbings", see HERE. I got the idea for adding rubbing as a challenge after getting The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones, see HERE. I loved the Henry Sr.'s diary from The Last Crusade, didn't you? Ha! Crusade!
I love to encourage you to make your own stuff - or as I say in my workshops "make it your own". Taking a rubbing of a texture, and then creating a resist painting with it is definitely a way to put your own spin on using an image.
So that's it! Make a wax rubbing, then paint over it for a resist. You can show the loose papers or better yet, add them to a journal page. Blog about it then come over here and leave a link in the comments. I'll post the entries as they come in, newest at top. As you visit the other crusaders who generously share their work be sure to leave encouraging words. Need a button? Take this:
